Texpack

Indie-rock band Texpack brings scrappy, slacker-spirited energy to Indonesia's music scene. The identity of their work is unpolished honesty — hook-filled, riff-driven indie rock that responds to the messiness of modern life and everyday human behavior, often described by the band themselves as a "teenage music distraction." Formed in Bogor in 2014 by a couple of high-schoolers who bonded over local bands and were nudged toward starting their own group, the quartet — Afnan on vocals and guitar, Dimas on bass and vocals, Pian on guitar, and Iqbal on drums — cut their teeth with a cassette EP, Courageous, in 2016, then broke out with their debut album Spin Your Wheels, whose lyrics turned frustration with an increasingly "sick society" into catchy, guitar-forward songs. What makes Texpack distinctive is how they sit inside a tight community of like-minded young alternative acts, sharing stages and collaborators across Bogor and Jakarta.

Texpack's credibility as a band has grown through patience rather than rush. After Spin Your Wheels and follow-up releases like The Early Serenade, they deliberately slowed down, spending a couple of years learning a cleaner production approach and writing more in Indonesian — a shift heard in the 2023 single "Edelweiss," with its stark imagery of scraping by on very little. That maturing came into focus with the 2024 EP Gonggo Sound, a four-song bridge that closes out the Spin Your Wheels era and hints at a second album, half its tracks keeping their old sloppy charm and half pointing toward something more grown-up. However, Texpack never treats "cleaning up" as selling out — allowing their new discipline to sharpen the songs while holding on to the loose, sompral attitude that made them worth listening to in the first place.
