Singer-songwriter Denisa brings a fearless transformation to Indonesia's music scene. The identity of her work is duality — the voice of a songwriter fused with the ear of a sound engineer, and a willingness to burn her old sound down and rebuild it heavier. The Jakarta solo artist, full name Bernadette Denisa Dhaniswara, began within the elegant, poppy singer-songwriter tradition before making a dramatic pivot into doom metal, sludge, and post-metal, all while keeping a pop sensibility in how she sings and structures a song. What makes Denisa distinctive is that she wears both hats at once: a performer who describes the stage as pure catharsis, and a trained audio engineer who studied for four years at SAE Institute and understands exactly how her sound is built from the inside out.
Denisa began writing around 2018, drawn first to lyrics and then to turning them into songs. Her early catalog — the 2019 mini-album Crowning, the double single "Collide / Pergi," and the album Bloodbuzz — carried a warmer, more melodic character, with some of that early work shaped alongside Dias Widjajanto and Rayhan Noor of Glaskaca. Now, Denisa is involved in a heavier chapter. Her turning point arrived with 2023's St. Bernadette, an album that traded her poppy colors for something darker and monochrome, drawing on the orbit of Deftones-adjacent projects like Team Sleep, Crosses, and Palms. Her character elevated that record into a milestone: she signed with Deathwish Inc., the label founded by Jacob Bannon of Converge, as the only Asian artist on its roster, with St. Bernadette set for a vinyl reissue and a new album on the way. Last but not least, her sense of community is on full display through her constant collaborations with fellow Indonesian heavy acts like Morgensoll, Pelteras, and Avhath.
